It may look like a Merchant-Ivory film, but this sumptuous adaptation of Edith Wharton's novel is no Room With a View. What seems at first glance an unlikely venture for relentlessly contemporary New Yorker Martin Scorsese really has a lot in common with his earlier work: Wharton's exploration of the workings of a closed society — that of wealthy, well-bred New Yorkers of the 1870s — shares Scorsese's keen regard for the rules of social games that characterize such films as Mean Streets and Goodfellas.
