Disillusioned painter Mason chucks the superficial glamour of New York and returns to an island on the Great Barrier Reef, where a weird assortment of characters come into his life--rich spinster Katsaros, drunken harridan Carr-Glyn, and her sexpot granddaughter, Mirren. When Mason eyes Mirren swimming, he asks her to become his model and she willingly does, to earn money for hairdressing school. Enter MacGowran, an old pal of Mason's who ingratiates himself with Katsaros, then steals money from her and skips the island. The thievery continues when Carr-Glyn steals the money her granddaughter has earned. Mirren chases her to a cliff, where they struggle, with Carr-Glyn plunging to her death. Police investigate but pronounce the old lady's demise accidental. Later, MacGowran is captured by the police. Mason and Mirren retire to a cozy cottage. Mason's first Australian project in almost a decade, this film proves boring despite the actor's considerable effort in the role of the sensitive artist. MacGowran also gives a fine performance in one of his last screen appearances. Thanks to some offensive bedroom scenes, AGE OF CONSENT was nearly saddled with an X rating in Australia. leave a comment
