Disillusioned painter Mason chucks the superficial glamour of New York and returns to an island on the Great Barrier Reef, where a weird assortment of characters come into his life--rich spinster Katsaros, drunken harridan Carr-Glyn, and her sexpot granddaughter, Mirren. When Mason eyes Mirren swimming, he asks her to become his model and she willingly does, to earn money for hairdressing school. Enter MacGowran, an old pal of Mason's who ingratiates himself with Katsaros, then steals money from her and skips the island.
