This misfired remake of Jacques Tourneur's classic film noir OUT OF THE PAST (1947) stars Jeff Bridges in the Robert Mitchum role, Rachel Ward in the Jane Greer part, and James Woods taking over for Kirk Douglas. Bridges plays Terry Brogan, a down-on-his-luck football player hired by shady nightclub owner Jake Wise (Woods) to find his lover, Jessie Wyler (Ward), who has run away to Mexico. Of course, once Terry finds Jessie, he falls head-over-heels for her and soon finds himself trapped in a complicated (and we mean complicated) web of murder and intrigue in which Jake, Jessie, Jessie's wealthy mother, and her partner Ben Caxton (Widmark), all battle for a plot of lucrative West Los Angeles real estate. Not even a bravura performance from Woods, some steamy love scenes between Bridges and Ward, and a thrilling daylight car chase down Sunset Boulevard can pull this confusing remake out of the doldrums. Film buffs will note that Greer, in the role of Ward's mother, played the Ward role in the original film. Phil Collins wrote and sang the Oscar-winning theme song. leave a comment
