Beautifully shot in Africa, German director Caroline Link's lovely adaptation of an autobiographical novel by Stefanie Zweig is a real-life Holocaust-era tale with a fascinating twist. Of all the places Jewish families found safe haven during the dark years of the Third Reich, few could have been further afield than Kenya, but that's exactly where six-year-old Zweig and her parents wound up. This touching film, which quite rightfully won the 2002 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, follows the fortunes of five-year-old Regina (Lea Kurka), her father (Merab Ninidze) and her mother (Juliane Kohler), a spoiled bourgeois lady who must learn to overcome her own prejudices to survive.
