Bellhop Linden witnesses a gangster assassination and is quickly gobbled up into the arms of a corrupt administration, politicians--from the mayor on down--taking enormous bribes from gang bosses and nightclubbing with them, all the while deciding Linden's fate. He is finally charged with the killing and almost railroaded for a crime he did not commit. The locale of the city is obviously Chicago since there is a reference to the stockyards. All old hat crime situations with rub-outs, knock-offs, one-way rides, and dialog curled out of the side of the mouth, but its archaic feel of the Dillinger era is fascinating. leave a comment
