Well-done love story has painter Darvas being rescued by Jaray (as the mysterious writer de Maupassant), while a mob of Parisian thugs swirls about her. He takes her home and then later to a fancy dress ball where she sees her teacher, Horbiger, who is jealous of her attentions from the writer whom he hates. Later she overhears Sakall tell the teacher that his recent examination of the frail Darvas reveals that she has an incurable ailment and that her death is imminent.
