Sensational-fiction-author Lukas is found dead at his desk, a letter from him stating that no one is to blame for his demise, but police feel differently and begin investigating his ex-flames, all of whom Lukas jocularly scandalized in his books. Flashbacks show a party arranged by his publisher, Carle, which takes place the night before and which is attended by the ex-girlfriends. In flashbacks, we see Lukas entertain several women that night before going to his study where he tells his valet, Kinnell, he intends to commit suicide--the world is too much with him--and the valet, it is revealed in the last scenes, suggests that Lukas leave a note so no one will be b...
