1936, Movie, NR, 86 mins

starstarstarstar
Well-done love story has painter Darvas being rescued by Jaray (as the mysterious writer de Maupassant), while a mob of Parisian thugs swirls about her. He takes her home and then later to a fancy dress ball where she sees her teacher, Horbiger, who is jealous of her attentions from the writer whom he hates. Later she overhears Sakall tell the teacher that his recent examination of the frail Darvas reveals that she has an incurable ailment and that her death is imminent. Darvas returns home, collapses, and takes to her bed to await the end. Jaray sees her before she dies, vowing his love. Director Koster maintains a brisk pace in this breezy film, his last before departing for Hollywood (one step ahead of the Nazis)--as was also the case of the great character actor Sakall. The film was lavish by Austrian standards of the time; it commanded a $300,000 budget, whereas most averaged $75,000 tops; the more generous budget shows in sets of the moody Parisian street scenes and grand houses.
