The Adventures Of Rabbi Jacob

1974, Movie, NR, 100 mins

De Funes is a French Archie Bunker whose racism demands that Arabs, Jews, blacks and those other than his own race and nationality are all right in their place, which is not next to him. A comic with a penchant for burlesque--magnifying facial expressions, exaggerating physical reactions--he gets mixed up with an Arab coup d'etat, accidentally frees a kidnap victim, and gets involved in a fantastic chase, all on the way to his daughter's wedding. Most of the mayhem is contrived, but some genuine hilarity is found in scenes such as his falling with his pursuers into a vat of glutinous substance in a gum factory. Most of the humor is low-brow and suspiciously concocted to reinforce, it seems, instead of indict the racial slurs. leave a comment
