Housewife Signoret tires of her spineless husband and trysts with a brutal truck driver, the two later conspiring to murder the spouse on a train. Vallone, as the truck driver, kills the hapless husband, but the murder is witnessed by Lesaffre. He tries to blackmail the murderous pair and is killed for his pains. This poor, bleak portrait of a sordid, uninteresting affair does a disservice to a powerful Zola novel. leave a comment
