ADRENALIN: FEAR THE RUSH
starstarstarstar
That final "e" isn't the only thing missing: There's no fear, there's no rush, there's no plot. Writer-director Albert Pyun (pronounced pyew with an "n"), whose made his fortune peddling such direct-to-video treasures as KICKBOXER 2 and BRAIN SMASHER ... A LOVE STORY, did, however, manage to come up with quite a premise: It's 2007, the Earth's population has fallen prey to a mysterious killer virus and the powers that be have turned key cities -- including Boston -- into quarantine camps for recent immigrants. Rookie cop Delon (Natasha Henstridge) is sent to help nab a rampaging, cannibalistic lunatic holed up in an abandoned prison, not realizing that he's carrying a new strain of virus. And you know what? It doesn't matter, because it doesn't have much to do with the rest of the movie, in which Delon and three fellow officers (including Christopher Lambert) spend an inordinate amount of time chasing and being chased by some guy in a grimy muscle shirt. Pyun has taken the climactic chase scene from countless monster movies -- specifically the ALIEN films -- and stretched it out to feature length. The result is as tedious as it is thoughtless: Implying that sero-positive individuals are highly contagious, flesh-eating monsters couldn't possibly have been deliberate. Could it? leave a comment
