In Australia in the 1840s, most of the country was a penal colony to which convicts were sent by British magistrates. Bridges is an American sailor found guilty of a crime he did not commit in Liverpool and transported to the wild country beyond Sydney where he, along with other prisoners, is whipped, starved and mistreated at every turn. He escapes with Booth but is recaptured. Booth again escapes after murdering a soldier, a crime for which the unlucky Bridges again is convicted. He appeals to the governor, Mills, a kindly, sympathetic soul bent on reforming the brutal system, and is given the chance to marry a female prisoner and begin developing five acres of bushy outback land. Bridges weds Merrow (a top-flight actress who appeared in THE LION IN WINTER) and the two begin a settlement which flourishes, other married prisoners joining them. The settlement is destroyed by Booth, who has been living in the outback with a band of cutthroats. Mills summarily pardons Bridges and Merrow, allowing them to rebuild as free citizens while Booth gets his comeuppance. A well-wrought story with exceptional photography. leave a comment
