Moss Hart, author of plays such as "The Man Who Came to Dinner" and "You Can't Take It With You," is the subject of this film biography. George Hamilton stars as the writer, and the film follows him from his days as a struggling dramatist through his rise to become a popular and successful writer of theatrical comedies. Along the way, he must overcome the standard obstacles usually included in these biopics. Hamilton is somewhat lifeless in the lead and only when Jason Robards appears as Hart's famed collaborator, George Kaufman, does the film really take off. The film is a faithful adaptation of Hart's autobiography, perhaps too faithful since it dwells far too much on the writer's doubts and fears. The film is worth a look if only to see Bert Convy attempting to portray a young Cary Grant. Casting doesn't get much more bizarre than that. leave a comment
