Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls

1995, Movie, PG-13, 105 mins

A bad locker-room joke, spun out to feature length and executed at obscene cost. This sequel to 1994's surprise blockbuster is shamelessly stupid, willfully juvenile and generally just plain gross -- which is, after all, the point. Jim Carrey reprises his role as the terminally adolescent Ace, finder of lost pets, wearer of goofy clothes and apotheosis of the Bad Hair Day. The plot follows Ace to the African jungles, where he's charged with locating a sacred white bat that keeps two feuding tribes from slaughtering one another (yes, it's full of weird racial overtones; no, the filmmakers don't bother to acknowledge them). Although ACE 2 begins with a surprisingly sharp parody of CLIFFHANGER, it goes straight downhill at an alarming pace. Still, it's better made than the first film, and it's bound to gratify anyone in need of further gags about flatulence, masturbation, vomiting, excretion and other lofty aspects of the human condition. leave a comment
