Kirk Douglas stars as an alcoholic reporter for a New Mexico newspaper who wrings a career-making exclusive out of a local tragedy: a man trapped in a mine cave-in. An uncompromising portrait of human nature at its worst, the film was far ahead of its time in its depiction of a media circus and the public's appetite for disaster.
