That old war horse virtual reality is the subject of a routine action bash with sci-fi trimmings. 2011: Media mogul R. D. Crowley (Robert Davi) has devised a novel way of diminishing the overcrowded penitentiary population. As head of the Department of Gaming, Crowley popularizes VR games in which prisoners try to outfox professional hunters in simulated trackdown situations. The motto of this televised blood sport is that if you die in the game, you die in real life. Rebel leader Will (Kayle Watson) and his advocates try to sabotage this cruel variation on the death penalty version, which involves suspended animation, mind control and, ultimately, lethal injection. But Crowley and his crippled cohort, Heinz Dietrich (J. Christian Ingvordsen, who also directed), intend to stay in power by giving the rabble what they want; they don’t care that their fierce competitions put untrained convicts — many in jail for minor infractions — at a desperate disadvantage. Sacrificing so others can escape a raid, Will falls into Dietrich’s hands, but unlike previous contestants, Will beats his opponents and attracts a following. Fighting in VR tourneys set during medieval times or in the Wild West, Will keeps on winning. His allies eventually spring him from Dietrich’s lab, but notice a computer-connector plug in his neck. Will has an unprecedented opportunity: He could jack back into Crowley's game and transmit a virus into the Department of Gaming's mainframe, laying the groundwork for a coup. But he'll have to trade in his newly acquired liberty to do it. Ingvordsen leaps across several genres and trips over his flat-footed direction in this otherwise anemic brawl-fest; if it weren't for Davi's menacing machismo, it would be a world-class bore. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
