Fast-paced actioner has Randolph Scott again donning the thumb-worn marshal's badge to clean up an end-of-the-trail cow town overrun with callous cattle barons and grim gunslingers, not dissimilar to the tales spun in VIRGINIA CITY and DODGE CITY. Scott is a Wyatt Earp-type lawman who slugs and shoots it out with the likes of Jack Lambert while Buchanan, the local sheriff, follows his own stereotype into drunken stupors. The good woman is played demurely by Rhonda Fleming while the wicked lady of the saloons is Ann Dvorak who shakes a mean leg and sings such ditties as "Every Time I Give My Heart," "All You Gotta Do," and "I Love It out Here in the West." The customary ending is double-crossed when Scott goes off with the gambling hall cutie, forsaking sweet thing Fleming, a finish not so surprising when realizing that this better-than-average oater is based on a novel by Ernest Haycox who wrote STAGECOACH, another excellent western where the hero returns to the fallen angel. leave a comment
