A Young Composer's Odyssey

In 1907 pre-revolutionary Russia, a young musician sets out to document the folk songs of his country. During this journey he comes across many different people, both amusing and frightening. His tour is constantly overshadowed by the threat of Czarist troops roaming the countryside, looking for anyone who might pose a threat to the already precarious monarchy. In a horrifying mistake, the map of the student's journey is confused with a list of potential radicals. The people he has visited are put under arrest and killed, and the film ends with a mass seizure instigated by the Czar's men during a community religious celebration.
