This bizarre picture concerns a middle-class housewife, Eva (Gudrun Landgrebe), who leaves her husband and turns to prostitution. She is initially conservative in her choice of clients but becomes more daring. Once she meets Chris (Mathieu Carriere), a bisexual prostitute who invites her to his luxurious apartment, the pair fall in love and share the flat, setting aside one room for their prostitution business--which rapidly becomes a highly organized chore of high-finance bookkeeping. Chris continues entertaining both male and female clients, while Landgrebe begins to favor johns with strange fetishes. After their work is done, Eva and Chris resume their romance. These conditions naturally put a strain on their relationship, which comes to a surprisingly surreal end. A very weird entry from the eccentric Robert Van Ackeren--who was once touted as the next Rainer Werner Fassbinder (he never fulfilled such a prophecy)--A WOMAN IN FLAMES became one of Germany's top-grossing films.
