A Very Private Affair: Review

This early directorial effort by Louis Malle offers an inside look at the life of a glamorous movie queen supposedly patterned after that of its star, Brigitte Bardot. Bardot, an 18-year-old who lives with her mother on a huge estate overlooking Lake Geneva, is infatuated with Mastroianni, an Italian magazine publisher and stage director who is married to Bardot's friend, Kubler. When Mastroianni takes little notice of Bardot, she goes to Paris to become a ballerina. A switch to modeling makes her the talk of town, bringing her to the attention of a movie producer. After three short years of jet-setting, she becomes an international star. Dissatisfied with the downside of fame, Bardot returns to Lake Geneva to pursue a quiet life with Mastroianni, who has since shed his wife. The couple shares some happy times together, but the fans and papparazzi begin to take a toll on the fragile Bardot, causing her to become increasingly depressed and reclusive. Despite the star appeal of the leads and the talent of director Malle, A VERY PRIVATE AFFAIR is a barely satisfying film that stumbles along without purpose. Although Malle had proven himself to be a gifted stylist with an interest in experimental narrative techniques in FRANTIC, THE LOVERS, and especially ZAZIE IN THE METRO, A VERY PRIVATE AFFAIR is a relatively tame film that employs its technical devices (freeze-frames, rear-projection) to no real effect.
