A Tiger Walks: Review

A somewhat disturbing Disney film starring Franklin as the 12-year-old daughter of local sheriff Keith, who wages a one-girl campaign to save the life of a savage tiger that has escaped from the circus after killing its trainer. Following some television exposure, children from all over the country send money to help the tiger. This expression of support for the animal disturbs the governor and his cronies. An election is coming up, and the adults expect him to kill the beast. Disaster strikes when a nervous National Guardsman mistakenly shoots a farmer running toward him to announce the presence of the tiger on the farm. Eventually Keith enlists the aid of Sabu (in his last movie), a circus employee, and together they capture the tiger alive. Succumbing to pressure, the governor allows the tiger to be placed in a zoo. Aside from a little girl's defense of a tiger, there is little that is not disturbing in this film's view of small-town life in the US. Except for Keith and Sabu, every adult in the film is portrayed as weak, stupid, mean, or corrupt. This may be the norm for Steven Spielberg and his proteges (BACK TO THE FUTURE; GREMLINS), but for Disney it is a real, and unwelcome, surprise. leave a comment
