Poor, depressing film starring Loren and Mastroianni as the only two residents left in their seedy apartment building on the day that Hitler has come to Italy to visit Mussolini. All the other citizens have run out to the streets to view the spectacle, including Loren's macho, fascistic husband, and her six children, leaving her alone. Across the courtyard lives outcast homosexual Mastrioanni, and, over the course of the day, the two lonely people draw close to each other, seeking the love and companionship that they have been denied. The picture managed to pick up two Oscar nominations: Best Actor (Mastrioanni, who lost to Richard Dreyfuss for THE GOODBYE GIRL) and Best Foreign Film (MADAME ROSA won instead). leave a comment
