A good action-adventure picture with a fair share of comedy, A PRIZE OF GOLD was shot in Europe and features excellent supporting work by a trio of British actors--Cole, Wolfit, and Patrick--to complement the performances of Widmark and Zetterling. Widmark is a US Army sergeant stationed in the British sector of Berlin. He falls in love with Zetterling, a refugee with one goal, namely to take a group of war orphans in her charge from Europe to a new life in Brazil. To do so she needs money, and Widmark assembles a unit to steal a shipment of gold that's being transported from England to Germany. Wolfit and Tomelty are part of the British group, while Widmark, Cole, and Patrick handle the actual chore of hijacking the plane and landing it at an abandoned airstrip. After the deed is done, Widmark and Cole have second thoughts and want to give the money back, but Patrick demurs, and there is a battle among the conspirators. In the end, Widmark takes the fall for the robbery but still manages to provide Zetterling with the money, because he gets Wolfit and Tomelty off the hook and they promise to come up with the needed cash for the orphans. Widmark's motivation is fuzzy, but the movie is so quickly paced that one forgives the plot holes, at least while watching the film. The title song is sung by Joan Regan and irrelevant to the action. leave a comment
