A Nice Girl Like Me: Review

Lighthearted yarn has Ferris as an orphaned girl forced to live with her nagging elderly aunts, Cooper and Carey. She gets away from them under the pretext of going to Paris to study languages, where she has a brief affair with a student, leaving her pregnant. Once back with her aunts, she makes up a story about the baby's belonging to someone else and her just watching over it. She reveals the truth to her father's caretaker, Andrews, however. Antsy to get away again, she goes to Venice to continue her "studies," where she has another affair that again leaves her pregnant. This time a young American tourist is the father. On her way back to England, she encounters a desperate Italian mother who sticks an infant in her arms, begging her to watch over the baby. Back home her aunts notice her condition and try to force her to marry her stuffy cousin Villiers. At the last moment, however, Ferris admits that she could never marry Villiers, choosing instead to give it a go with Andrews, the man she has really loved all along. Ferris adds the right amount of charm to the whimsical character, with the rest of the cast filling their roles nicely. Story moves at a steady pace, keeping a comic atmosphere throughout--enabling what could lapse into cynicism or mushy romance to remain pleasant humor. leave a comment
