A 1950s version of a 1930s screwball comedy, this falls a bit short but has enough laughs to make it proceed painlessly. MacMurray is a radio commentator with a honey voice and lots of sugary philosophy; Parker is a secretary with a large legal firm who is dispatched to California to tell him that he has been left a $2 million fortune. MacMurray is about to marry Buckley and has no idea of his good fortune, so Parker decides to keep her knowledge to herself and win MacMurray away from Buckley--who is secretly admired by MacMurray's pal, Carlson, a doctor. The marriage is about to transpire when best man Carlson takes off. MacMurray races after the doctor to La Jolla, down the coast. On the way, he and secretary Parker are moored in a fogbank along the shore and hit by a semi-tidal wave. They are also taken in by rotund Martin, who is throwing a tequila party for his Mexican pals and thinks that MacMurray and Parker are on their honeymoon. In the end, Carlson is teamed with Buckley (whom he's wanted from reel one), and MacMurray's fortune is donated to charity, but by that time Parker loves him for his good old self and doesn't need the addition of all that cash to cement her affections. It's a cute romantic-comedy without much taxing of the brain cells. In other words, when you've had too much coffee and you can't fall asleep, this should do it. leave a comment
