Two decades after the smashing success of A MAN AND A WOMAN, director Claude Lelouch, stars Anouk Aimee and Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Francis Lai's unforgettable theme song came together again for this relatively satisfying sequel. Twenty years older, no longer a racing-car driver, and involved with a considerably younger woman (Marie-Sophie Pochat), Jean-Louis (Trintignant) organizes a Paris-to-Dakar rally; Anne (Aimee), his love in the original film, has risen from script girl to producer and, searching for a hit, has chosen to make a musical about her affair with Jean-Louis starring Richard Berry (playing himself). As the film continues, several stories interweave: the real-life reunion between Jean-Louis and Anne; the on-screen tale she is filming; the rally, during which Jean-Louis and his young girlfriend are stranded in the desert; and a seemingly unrelated subplot about a madman who escapes from a mental hospital. Despite Lelouch's attempt to cram too many stories into one movie, A MAN AND A WOMAN: 20 YEARS LATER is an enjoyable, often funny effort, though those who've seen and liked the original are bound to appreciate this more than other viewers. leave a comment
