An uninspired screen version of Steven Sondheim's stage play, which in turn was based on Ingmar Bergman's SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT. It has nothing in common with Bergman's picture except the basic premise: that of a group of people meeting for dinner at a country estate. Those on the guest
list include Taylor, a lively actress who wants to settle down; Cariou, a newly married lawyer who had a past fling with Taylor; Down, his 18-year-old virgin bride; and Rigg, the wife of Taylor's current lover, Guittard. Prince, the stage director of Sondheim's play, cannot handle the screen
