A Dog Of Flanders

The third and finest film version of Ouida's classic children's novel of 1872 features David Ladd as Nello, a Dutch boy who wants to be a painter but seems to have no chance of ever attaining his dream. He lives with his grandfather (Donald Crisp) in Flanders, where they eke out a living by delivering milk from neighboring farms to Antwerp. They find a sickly dog and nurse it back to health, after which it becomes their cart-dog. When the grandfather dies, the boy and dog struggle to make it on their own, with the help of a kindly artist (Theodore Bikel).
