A Christmas Carol

This superb adaptation of the Dickens classic stars Owen as the hard-hearted Scrooge in probably the best role of his long and distinguished career. Lockhart is terrific as the much-harassed Cratchit, and the rest of the cast do honor to their parts as well. Although this wonderful story has been made many times, the Owen rendition of the skinflint-turned-Maecenas is the best and most believable, even in comparison with the TV version so wonderfully enacted by George C. Scott. Owen represents the essential Scrooge, never an introspective soul, whose discovery of his nature brings about not so much a startling transformation of character as the emergence of a soul that was waiting all along to struggle out of ledgerbooks and tally sheets. A great and eternally heart-warming film that can stand an appreciative viewing every year through every decade. leave a comment
