A Breed Apart: Review
An international cast and crew went into the backwoods of North Carolina to film this good-looking but diffused story. Hauer is a self-styled conservationist in the wild who resents the fact that people have been trying to steal the rare eggs of that rarest of birds, the bald eagle. A new breed of bald eagle has been discovered, and collector Pleasence wants the shells for himself. To that end, he hires Boothe, a mountain climber, to pretend to be a nature photographer. Boothe arrives at the small village near where the birds are nesting and meets Hauer and Turner, who runs a shop. Suspecting that Boothe is not what he claims, Hauer keeps him away from the area where the birds are until Boothe begins to win Hauer's trust. The big question is What is the purpose of this film? A great deal of the script must have been trimmed (or footage edited) because much of it makes no sense, and one can hardly believe that such intelligent actors as Hauer, Turner, Boothe, and Pleasence would have accepted their roles without knowing what the movie was about. The cinematography is excellent; it's too bad the backgrounds are more intriguing than the actors in the foreground.
