Depressing but engrossing remake of the classic Hepburn and Barrymore 1932 melodrama of the same name, this time with Menjou as the insane father and O'Hara (in one of her first roles) as the loyal daughter. Menjou escapes from the mental institution and shows up on his wife's doorstep on
Christmas to find that she's divorced him and is ready to remarry. His sudden reappearance shocks everyone, including his daughter O'Hara, who is also engaged. When she learns that her father's insanity is hereditary, she refuses to marry on the chance she may bear children with the disease and
spends the rest of her days caring for her father.
