Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are proved to be where the money was this weekend as it debuted atop the movie box office.

The adaptation of the Maurice Sendak children's book took in $32.5 million and ended up being a bigger hit with adults than families; moviegoers 18 and older accounted for 43 percent of the audience and parents with children under 12 made up 27 percent, according to distributor Warner Bros.

The thriller Law Abiding Citizen, starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler, took the second spot earning $21.3 million, while the cult horror flick Paranormal Activity took in $20.2 million from only 760 theaters. The film, which Paramount marketed by asking Internet users to "demand" that the movie come to their town, has grossed $33.7 million since Sept. 25.

Fourth place went to last week's box-office winner, Couples Retreat, with $17.9 million for the weekend. The Stepfather debuted in fifth place, earning $12.3 million.

Rounding out the top 10: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (No. 6; $8.1 million) Zombieland (No. 7; $7.8 million) Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3D (No. 8; $3 million); Surrogates (No. 9; $1.92 million); The Invention of Lying (No. 10; $1.9 million).
