The new release took in $7.4 million domestically and $12.7 million abroad, including million-plus hauls in the U.K ($1.9 million), France ($1.4 million), Japan ($1.2 million) and Germany ($1.1 million).
Though many box office observers expected the numbers to be higher domestically, it's still expected to win the Halloween weekend. Its biggest competition is the horror thriller Paranormal Activity, which goes into wide release Friday.
