Can Star Trek "Make Optimism Cool Again"? J.J. Abrams Hopes So

J.J. Abrams' take on Star Trek isn't due out until 2009, but that isn't stopping him from expounding on his upcoming opus, or predicting what he hopes audiences will take away from the experience.
First, Trek fans should be warned that Abrams was always a Star Wars guy, because it was more "visceral" than Captain Kirk's scene. He told EW he wanted to make film "that grabbed me the way Star Wars did."
Abrams was also drawn to the uplifting nature of the story. "I think a movie that shows people of various races working together and surviving hundreds of years from now is not a bad message to put out right now," he said. "In a world where a movie as incredibly produced as The Dark Knight is raking in gazillions of dollars, Star Trek stands in stark contrast. It was important to me that optimism be cool again."
For his part, Leonard Nimoy — who's reprising his role as an older version of his original Spock — thinks the film can't arrive soon enough. "I think the world could use it," he said.
