Sean Penn Chooses Family Over Films

Sean Penn

Curly and Moe have lost their Larry.

Sean Penn has dropped out of two film projects, including the upcoming Three Stooges movie, to focus on his family, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Penn, who recently wrapped Fair Game, in which he plays the husband of former CIA agent Valerie Plame, has split and reconciled with his wife, Robin Wright Penn, twice in the past 18 months.

The actor joined Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro in the Farrelly brothers' Stooges film in March and was set to star in the drama Cartel. Penn's role in Cartel — about a man who tries to protect his son following his wife's death at the hands of Mexican drug cartels — will be recast. It was unknown whether the Farrellys, who've tried to get Stooges off the ground for a decade, will wait for Penn. Production was slated to begin in August.

TVGuide.com's calls to the Farrellys' rep were not immediately returned.

Penn filed for legal separation from Wright Penn in April and rescinded proceedings a month later. The couple, who've been married since 1996 and have two children, filed for divorce in December 2007 before reconciling in April 2008.
