Robert Downey Jr. could be the next man behind the curtain.

Downey is in talks with the producers of Disney's planned Wizard of Oz prequel to star as the wizard, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Breaking nerd news: Joss Whedon tapped to direct Avengers movie

The script for the project, tentatively titled The Great and Powerful, is based on parts of the L. Frank Baum books in which the wizard was a charlatan in Kansas before arriving in Oz.

Two directors being considered for the project are Sam Mendes (American Beauty) and Adam Shankman (Hairspray and Bedtime Stories), and the film could begin shooting as early as next spring, according to the L.A. Times.
