Bond Bigger Than Ever: Quantum Sets Record with No. 1 Debut

Daniel Craig in Quantum of Solace

Quantum of Solace left the box office shaken and stirred this weekend with a $70.4 million haul to open at No. 1.

The gigantic intake easily set a new franchise record for the biggest domestic bow, topping 2002's Die Another Day, which snagged $47.1 million its opening weekend, The Hollywood Reporter reports. In addition, Quantum pulled in $30 million more than its predecessor, 2006's Casino Royale — Daniel Craig's debut as 007.

No match for Bond, last week's top earner, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, was bumped to second place, fetching $36.1 million. The animated sequel's cumulative 10-day total now stands at $118 million.

A trio of films held strong for the following three spots. Raunchy Role Models registered $11.7 million for a two-week total of $38.1 million, while High School Musical 3: Senior Year fell one spot to fourth ($5.8 million) and Changeling nipped at Zac Efron's heels with $4.2 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were Zack and Miri Make a Porno (No. 6, $3.2 million), Soul Men (No. 7, $2.42 million), The Secret Life of Bees (No. 8, $2.4 million), Saw V (No. 9, $1.7 million) and The Haunting of Molly Hartley (No. 10, $1.6 million).
