Mendes' foray into action films follows Marc Forster's footsteps. Forster, known for dramas such as Monster's Ball, directed the most recent Bond film, 2008's Quantum of Solace.
Mendes, who won a best director Oscar for 1999's American Beauty, most recently did the indie drama Away We Go and the film adaptation of Revolutionary Road starring his wife, Oscar winner Kate Winslet.
Quantum of Solace raked in $586 million worldwide.
