Let's hear it for the girl: Dancing with the Stars pro/America's sweetheart Julianne Hough has signed on to the Footloose remake, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Hough will make her film debut opposite Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl) in the project, which is tentatively scheduled for a 2010 release. Crawford replaced Zac Efron, who dropped out of the movie in March.
It's unclear at this point if Hough and Crawford will play Ren and Ariel, the roles made legendary by Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer in the 1984 original. Maybe not. Variety is reporting that the studio is planning "a more mature approach to the material than in the original Footloose."
What does that mean exactly? Top hats and opera gloves? A retirement community?
Our best guess: Footloose 2010: The Year We Make Eye Contact moves the action from Kansas to Orlando, where Ren works at Sea World instead of a grain mill and Ariel's dad is a ballroom-dancing coach (Louis van Amstel, call your agent!) instead of a minister. It's not dancing that's banned, it's unchoreographed dancing. The kids sneak off to the Okefenokee Swamp to participate in some unison-free moves under the moonlight. Sounds... terrible, right?
Please make me a liar, Kenny Ortega; we're holding out for a hero!
How should they remake Footloose? Stick to the original's script or start from scratch?
