Marvel Recruits Director Joe Johnston for Captain America

Captain America

Captain America is one step closer to hitting the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios has snatched up Joe Johnston to direct First Avenger: Captain America, due in theaters May 6, 2011.

No writers or actors are currently attached to the project.

Johnston, who won an Oscar for his visual effects work on Raiders of the Lost Ark, had been in discussions with Marvel for two years on the film. His other directing credits include The Rocketeer, Jurassic Park III, Hidalgo and the upcoming remake of The Wolfman.

Captain America will merely be one of many upcoming comic book flicks from Marvel, with an onslaught that includes the Iron Man trilogy and Thor, all leading towards The Avengers.

The Avengers is scheduled for a July 15, 2011 release. If you're bad at math, that's two months after Captain America's release, which should make for a nice summer for comic geeks.

Who do you think should play Captain America?
