Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro will helm the two-part Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit, to give the franchise a fresh take, according to The Associated Press.

Rings director Peter Jackson is currently adapting the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy novel into a script and will produce The Hobbit, but the Oscar-winning New Zealand filmmaker has passed the directing duties to del Toro.

Art designer Richard Taylor, a longtime Jackson collaborator, told the AP that he thinks Jackson passed the torch to del Toro so he could "bring something passionate and unique and original and new to the content for the sake of the fans."

Del Toro's credits include Pan's Labyrinth and two Hellboy movies.
