Couples Retreat proved to be the most popular destination for weekend moviegoers as the comedy debuted atop the box office.
Starring Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Kristen Bell and Malin Akerman, Retreat pulled in $35.3 million to push last weekend's top earner, Zombieland, to second place. Zombieland took in another $15 million, bringing its total to $47.8 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs finished in third place with $12 million for a cumulative total of $96.2 million.

Low-budget horror flick Paranormal Activity, riding on word of mouth, rose 15 spots to fifth place with $7.1 million. Paramount expanded the film into daylong release in 160 theaters after two weeks of midnight-only showings.
Rounding out the top 10: Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3D (No. 4, $7.6 million); Surrogates (No. 6, $4.1 million); The Invention of Lying (No. 7; $3.3 million); Whip It (No. 8; $2.8 million); Capitalism: A Love Story (No. 9; $2.7 million); and Fame (No. 10; $2.5 million).
