Mall Cop Arrests the Competition

Paul Blart: Mall Cop
Weekend movie-goers are hitting the Mall in droves.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop led the box-office pack, debuting to about $33.8 million in its first two days. In its second week out, Clint Eastwood drama Gran Torino sped to number two, with a take of $22.2 mil. The movie lost 25 percent of its audience after its leading opening last week, according to Variety.
The Jensen Ackles-helmed 3-D thriller, My Bloody Valentine, slashed its way to number three, earning $21.9 mil. Valentine cut just above Notorious B.I.G.'s eponymous biopic Notorious, which found its rhythm with $21.5 mil. Having opened in 1,638 theaters, the film earned $13,126 per location — the best of any film this weekend.
Paramount's family comedy Hotel for Dogs had comfortable accommodation in fifth place, earning $17.7 mil. Studio exec Jim Tharp said the take far exceeded expectations.
Bride Wars followed Hotel with $11.8 mil, besting horror movie The Unborn, which saw $9.8 mil in its second week. Ed Zwick's WWII drama Defiance, starring James Bond's alter ego Daniel Craig, earned $9.2 mil with a wide release and taking eighth place.
Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson's holiday flick Marley & Me still had a little bite left at number nine, earning $6.3 mil, while the award-sweeping Slumdog Millionaire presumably got a boost from its Golden Globes win to move up to the tenth spot.
