Chihuahua Takes Down Lies for Box-Office Honors
Beverly Hills Chihuahua topped the box office for a second straight weekend, taking in $17.5 million, while Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe's Body of Lies bowed well below expectations.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Disney pooch comedy dropped only 40 percent for a to-date total of $52.2 million.
Horror flick Quarantine racked up a respectable $14.2 million to edge Lies for second. The DiCaprio-Crowe political drama underwhelmed and followed in third with $13.1 million.
Other new releases crashed and burned: Football feature The Express debuted in sixth with $4.7 million, while City of Embers coughed up $3.2 million for 10th place.
Thanks to a wide release, Keira Knightley's period piece The Duchess climbed to ninth with $3.32 million.
Rounding out the top 10 were Eagle Eye in fourth ($11 million); Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, fifth ($6.5 million); Nights in Rodanthe, seventh ($4.6 million); and Appaloosa, eighth ($3.34 million).
