Angels & Demons Ascends to No. 1

Tom Hanks

Angels & Demons didn't soar above expectations at the box office, but it staved off a strong Star Trek showing to debut at No. 1.

The Tom Hanks-starrer reeled in $48 million, edging out Star Trek's solid second-week haul of $43 million. The J.J. Abrams reboot now stands at $147.6 million.

Angels' bow falls short of predecessor The Da Vinci Code's debut of $77.1 million, but it marks the second-best opening of Hanks' career, behind Code.

Landing in third place was X-Men Origins: Wolverine with $14.8 million. Wolverine's three-week total sits at $151.1 million.

Two non-blockbusters closed out the top five: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (No. 4, $6.8 million) and Obsessed (No. 5, $4.5 million).

The weekend's other new release, Management, starring Jennifer Aniston and Steve Zahn, opened in limited release to $378,000, good enough for a No. 16 debut.

Rounding out the top 10 were: 17 Again (No. 6, $3.4 million), Monsters vs. Aliens (No. 7, $3 million), The Soloist (No. 8, $2.4 million), Next Day Air (No. 9, $2.2 million) and Earth (No. 10, $1.6 million).
