2012 Destroys Box Office Competition

2012

2012 topped the box office over the weekend with an estimated $65 million — the seventh-highest November debut ever.

The Sony Pictures flick, starring John Cusack and Danny Glover, took in $225 million worldwide and had the second-highest grossing start for a disaster movie after director Roland Emmerich's previous doomsday film, The Day After Tomorrow.

Coming in at No. 2: Disney's A Christmas Carol with $22.3 million, down only 26 percent from its opening weekend for a total of $63.3 million.

Other new releases included rock 'n' roll-themed Pirate Radio, which took in $2.9 million at No. 11, while Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire, which expanded to 174 sites, grossed $6.1 million taking the No. 4 spot.

Rounding out the top 10: The Men Who Stare at Goats (No. 3; $6.2 million), This Is It (No. 5; $5.1 million), The Fourth Kind (No. 6; $4.7 million), Couples Retreat (No. 7; $4.25 million), Paranormal Activity (No. 8; $4.2 million) Law Abiding Citizen (No. 9; $3.9 million) and The Box (No. 10; $3.1 million).
