The first film to romantically pair Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell, 7TH HEAVEN was directed by Frank Borzage, a former actor who was particularly skilled at eliciting subtle performances from his actors and giving sentimental material a polish that elevated it above run-of-the-mill melodrama. Chico (Farrell), who works in the Parisian sewers and dreams of becoming a street cleaner, takes pity on waif Diane (Gaynor), who's being exploited by her sister Nana (Gladys Brockwell). Nana calls the police on Diane, who is saved only because Chico claims that she's his wife. But she doesn't fit his image of the perfect girl: He has his heart set on a blond wife, and prays regularly to God in hopes of marrying one. As World War I breaks out, Chico realizes that he really does love Diane, but he's sent to the front while she becomes a munitions worker. After the Armistice, Diane is devastated when she receives word that Chico has been killed. But the report proves false: He's been blinded, but returns home to the jubilant Diane. Following the success of 7TH HEAVEN, Gaynor and Farrell went on to make another 10 romances (11 if you count their brief appearance in the 1929 revue HAPPY DAYS) before the public finally tired of seeing them together. 7TH HEAVEN was based on the 1922 novel by Austin Strong. leave a comment
