6.5 Special

1958, Movie, NR, 85 mins

Okay teeny-bopper film based on a popular BBC television show of the day. Two kids want to make it big in the music business, so they head for London. They manage to get an audition with the "6.5 Special" producer and, naturally, they make the grade. This leads to a television debut with some British pop stars (in those oh-so-innocent pre-Beatles days) playing themselves. Lots of forgettable music and plenty of screaming teenies make this a film definitely rooted in its time. The direction shows an understanding of a specific audience, and the acting is acceptable for the film's intended viewing group. Songs include "King of Dixieland," "Come to My Arms" (sung by Dickie Valentine), "The Gypsy In My Soul" (sung by the Kentones), "Say Goodbye Now" (sung by Victor Soverall), "Ever Since I Met Lucy" (sung by Jimmy Lloyd), "Midgets" (sung by Joan Regan, the King Brothers, Desmond Lane). leave a comment
