Trial by Television
Justice: Wooing a court of public opinion

If there were any justice, TV would ease up on the glut of crime and legal dramas. But that's hardly likely, and Fox's cynical Justice (Wednesdays at 9 pm/ET) knows it all too well. Realizing how pointless it would be to try to reinvent the courtroom drama, Justice embraces the fact that our post-O.J. society is saturated with true-crime coverage and fake-crime stories. That's why TV itself (embodied by a fictional infotainment show, "American Crime") is a major character in Jerry Bruckheimer's latest fun-to-watch procedural. As the head of a glamorous L.A. law firm, Victor Garber sheds the tight-lipped restraint of Alias' Jack Bristow and taps into his theatrical roots as cocky read more

Morgan Spurlock Serves More Days

Morgan Spurlock, 30 Days

Documentarians don't come much more dedicated than Morgan Spurlock. The director nearly destroyed his liver on his McDonalds-only diet for his film Super Size Me; he and his girlfriend (now wife), Alexandra Jamieson, lived on minimum wage for his FX series, 30 Days; and this year he went to prison for the show. On the occasion of the Season 1 DVD release of 30 Days — which brings to light different perspectives on controversial issues (homophobia, alcoholism, anti-Muslim sentiment) by asking people to walk a mile in someone else's shoes — read more

I had a quick question. I ...

Question: I had a quick question. I heard a song in the new trailer for Nicolas Cage's The Weather Man that's also used on Morgan Spurlock's show 30 Days. Do you know what it is?

Answer: It's Iggy Pop's "The Passenger," which, unlike many songs featured in movie trailers, is actually used in The Weather Man.

Yeah, I admit it: I'd never before...

Yeah, I admit it: I'd never before even thought about watching those video clips of the 3-ton harpy screeching about how "God drew me into this show." So it was a little disappointing to realize that said breakdown wouldn't occur until next week. But I kept an open mind; this is like a lowbrow version of Morgan Spurlock's 30 Days, right? Except that placing an admittedly closed-minded religious fanatic from small-town Louisiana in the home of a New Agey astrology-following hypnotherapist in Massachusetts doesn't exactly sound like an experiment. We pretty much know what's going to happen. That doesn't mean it is any less fun to watch Marguerite Perrin (none of her new family seems to notice that she calls herself "Margaret") squirm and literally vomit from the un-Christianness of it all. I don't get how celebrating the solstice is ungodly if you're supposed to believe read more

Days of our Lives is making good...

Days of our Lives is making good on its promise to bring back more classic characters. Now that Austin Peck is back as Sami's ex-lover, Austin Reed, what better time for Christie Clark to return as Carrie, the half sister Sami once battled for his affections? She'll reappear on the NBC sudser in early December. "Days could not be more delighted that Christie Clark is returning to Salem," the show's rep tells TVGuide.com. "Since the [Carrie] character and the actress both grew up on the show, they are both an integral part of our history, on and off the screen. The fans should look forward to a tremendous story that picks up where Carrie left off. We will most certainly be addressing the imminent questions about Carrie's past relationships." When last seen in 1999, Carrie left town to be with Dr. Mike Horton (Roark Critchlow). Mike won't be back, confirms the rep, but his a read more

THE DAYS AFTER TOMORROW

FX has renewed Morgan Spurlock's docu-series 30 Days for a second season. Averaging more than a million viewers a week, 30 Days fared far better than FX's new comedies Starved and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which tumbled to 981,000 and 840,000 viewers respectively in their second weeks. The news was better over at HBO, where Entourage nabbed a series-high 2.6 million viewers Sunday. Yes, the boys have arrived. read more

Beauty and the Geek My DVR let...

Beauty and the GeekMy DVR let me down. I checked it twice before leaving the house to make sure the season pass was working, but lo and behold, it didn't record. OK, maybe it wasn't all technology's fault; Mother Nature and a pesky thunderstorm might have had a little something to do with knocking out the power while the show was on. I feel so helpless with TV stuff out of my control, much like I'm sure both the Beauties and the Geeks felt while they were roughing it in the great outdoors. The mere idea of Richard in the wilderness makes me giggle; the promos alone had me cracking up. I was forced to call my friend Julie, who kindly informed me the &#252bergeek is still around since Scarlet and Shawn lost the camping quiz. I can only imagine the look on Chuck's face next week when Richard strolls back in after three times in the elimination room — especially s read more
